Short back focus for a compact and light lens
The EOS 450D features an APS-C sized sensor which increases the focal length
of the EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 by1.6x over 35mm film format. The compact size
of the EOS 450D’s sensor means its reflex mirror can be made smaller as well,
making it possible to bring the back of the EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 closer to
the sensor. This different lens construction (the ‘S’ in EF-S stands for
‘short back focus’) results in compact size and low weight.
